A note from Irene...

The library and our eNewsletter are in response to requests we have had from people around the world for information about how to increase the personal safety of themselves and their loved ones. Our goal is to help EVERYONE of all ages and all abilities living ANYWHERE to learn how to use their own power to stay safe, act wisely, and believe in themselves.

Having your children grow up with these skills can give you great peace of mind. Many years ago, when my son was about to leave our quiet town for a summer in New York City, he asked me if I had any advice for him. I thought carefully for a moment, not wanting to offend this proud young man. "Please remember," I told him slowly, "to look both ways before you cross the street."

My son straightened up to his full height and grinned down at me. "In other words, Mom," he said, putting an arm around my shoulders, "You want me to Walk with Awareness and Confidence!"

Walking with Awareness and Confidence is the first skill we practice with our students in our classes. You are far less likely to be chosen as a victim if you act alert and calm than if you seem timid or absent-minded or aggressive. You are more likely to see potential danger and avoid it. AND you are less likely to get hit by a car.

It was still hard to let my son go, but it helped me to know that he had the tools he needed to stay safe in most situations. Of course, he had a wonderful time in New York City!

In preventing problems, it is important to remember that the most simple skills work most of the time. Being alert and calm. Yelling. Remembering that you are more important than your things. Leaving a dangerous place and getting to safety. The examples are all around us. Recently, near where I live, a serial rapist ran away as soon as the woman he was attacking screamed for help. Two men were killed because they automatically fought over their possessions when they were robbed by a man with a gun. Other people, who simply handed over their money when robbed by the same man, were unhurt. Even in the World Trade Center, most of the people who left the buildings right away, as soon as the first plane hit, were able to escape.

We know that the skills we teach can increase safety, confidence, and peace of mind. We want to share what we have learned with all of our readers so that you can pass this crucial information on to the important people in your lives.

This resource section is full of crystal-clear, easy to apply ideas. Many of them, you can take and use right now to increase your peace-of-mind, safety and security.
